Common types of compression Stems

A standard stem has a brass stem screw that holds either a flat or beveled neoprene washer to the end of the spindle. Replace the stem screw if it is worn.

A tophat stem has a snap-on neoprene diaphragm instead of a standard washer. Fix leaks by replacing the diaphragm.

A reverse-pressure stem has a beveled washer at the end of the spindle. To replace the washer, unscrew the spindle from the rest of the assembly. Some stems have a small nut that holds the washer.
